WOW WI Book Group met at the Conservative Club Alexandra Parade on Tuesday 14th May. After some confusion as to which room we had been allocated (!) we settled down and discussed "The Man Who Broke into Auschwitz" by Denis Avey and Rob Broomby. This is a memoir written by a WWII army veteran Denis Avey who fought in the north African desert campaign, was shipwrecked as a POW and ended up in the manufacturing part of a POW camp adjacent to Auschwitz concentration camp. During his incarceration he swaps places with a Jewish inmate in the infamous Auschwitz camp determined to see for himself the truth about the camp. His wartime experiences affect him for the remainder of his life. This extraordinary tale of one man's courage and determination to bear witness to the horrors that he had seen, made compelling if not always comfortable reading. The book itself was an accessible read and despite the subject matter most of the group members 'enjoyed' reading it, despite the Internet conjecture that some of the events described were exaggerated. A popular choice overall.
WOW WI Book Group will continue to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at the Conservative Club for the foreseeable future (apart from August when there is no meeting) . There will be a small charge for attending book group.
The next two meetings are:
Tuesday 11th June Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
Tuesday 9th July At Sea by Laurie Graham
New members ALWAYS welcome!
