Book Report 2015.....

September we read The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton. Much anticipated and much hyped in the press, this book was for most of us slightly disappointing. Set in 17th century Amsterdam it tells the story of Nella a young woman arriving from the countryside to live with her new husband Johannes, a wealthy merchant. Married life is not as she expected, nor are the other occupants of her new home. When her husband presents her  with a large dolls house she engages a mysterious miniaturist who then sends her tiny figures and furniture that appear to reflect her life and foretell  her future. Beautifully written and atmospheric,  however we felt that the  ending was rushed and plot overall uneven. Worth a read but not a Must Read.

October we read  The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes by Anna McPartlin... an entertaining  easy read about a woman in the last few weeks of her life, surrounded by her large Irish family. Funny and sad, a good story and an enjoyable tear jerker.

November was Funny Girl by Nick Hornby. This novel starts in 1964 with Barbara, a smart ambitious girl from Blackpool, and follows her life in London as she carves out a career as a comedienne and actress in  the early days of TV sitcoms. The references to television programmes and family life in that era, and how it changed over the decades was enjoyable and produced  a lot of reminiscence about TV and radio programmes we  grew up with. However there was little empathy felt for the main characters, and we felt the book was aimed at  a  London media readership. One for Nick Hornby fans only.
